Venue: Welkom Civic Centre
It's been a while since we've covered the WPF Welkom Classic and, as I had hoped, it was nothing short of awesome. Bodybuilding in the Free State is huge, and so are a few of the athletes. Considering it was one of the WPF's first shows of the year, the conditioning of most of the athletes was impressive, to say the least. Kiewiet Prinsloo pulled out all the stops to ensure that all guests and athletes who travelled to be there were well catered for. He is a passionate individual who will stop at nothing to promote our sport. He truly is a great ambassador for South African bodybuilding and I look forward to the other shows he is hosting later this year.
USN were the title sponsor of the event and gave away a huge amount of prizes on the evening. The venue was packed to capacity and the athletes put on a truly great show, even though the event was judged live throughout the evening. There were a few decisions that I personally didn't agree with. I would have swapped some of the second and third placed athletes around because I prefer a harder and leaner physique. It was evident that some of the judges chose size over conditioning, but overall the results were very fair and the competition was judged really well.
One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Morne Landman get up on stage. He is huge, but the best part of his physique is that his proportions and symmetry are brilliant and his conditioning is great for a guy carrying that much muscle. Given a bit more time to develop tighter conditioning he could be a serious force to be reckoned with in South African super-heavyweight bodybuilding. With a bit more separation in his legs, bigger hamstrings and a few posing alterations, I have no doubt that Morne will be a serious contender for the overall title.
A big thanks must go to the WPF SA for a great show, and an even bigger thanks to Kiewiet for all his efforts in making this a truly successful event. See you at the WPF Goldfields Classic!
