As one of the highlights of the IFBB show calendar, the H&H Classic didn't disappoint, offering another truly great show. Although small and only comprising nine categories, the standard and conditioning of the athletes was simply remarkable. Hosted by two of the IFBB SA's overall bodybuilding champions, Hennie Kotze and Herman Du Plessis, as well as the IFBB Gauteng North, headed up by chairlady Ellmari Wroe and her team, the show was very well organised and successful all round.
JC Gilbert made a great showing, winning the junior under 21 division, demonstrating such amazing talent that if he chooses to pursue bodybuilding to it's full extent he will, without a doubt, become one of South Africa's best. He has perfect proportions, thickness and density to match, not to mention, he was one of the few overall guys in the competition to display shredded glutes. JC fits firmly in my category of athletes who are destined to be the future of South African bodybuilding, so I look forward to seeing him improve in years to come.
Another great highlight of this competition was the bikini division. Although new to the IFBB in 2010, the bikini division has shot to the top of the popularity list here in SA, with girls pouring into competitions all around South Africa to compete in this new and highly competitive division. Each and every girl in this line-up had worked hard, so deciding who the eventual winner out of the top three should be was clearly a long and drawn out process, which had the girls presenting themselves round after round on stage. Rene Pienaar eventually took the number one slot, with Arnelle de Beer and Hillary de Beer placing second and third respectively. However, one problem I currently have with this division is the fact that the competitors are still performing rigid front poses when asked to face the front. This kind of posing has been completely eliminated from this division for the reason that girls are judged on their physique and “beach ready” presentation, rather than the rigid poses of those used in the more muscular body fitness division. With that said, this line-up was still one of the highlights of the evening's proceedings.
The body fitness division saw the return of Michelle Price with, what can only be described as a perfect balance of proportion and conditioning. She was the clear winner in this division from the start and has improved remarkably since I last saw her on stage at the 2009 IFBB SA Championships in East London. I have no doubt that Michelle will be a serious contender at this year's SA champs in KZN and I look forward to seeing what she brings to the stage.
The biggest surprise of the show for me personally was the incredible changes that I saw in the physique of Charles Mazibuko. Charles won the up to 90kg division, as well as the well deserved overall title. The physique he managed to bring to this stage was phenomenal and the evolution that his body has undergone in such a short space of time is almost unbelievable. If he carries on bringing this kind of progress to the stage year after year, I have no doubt that we'll see Charles standing in a few elite overall line-ups. A big thank you must go to all the sponsors who made this event possible and to Hennie, Herman, Ellmari and the Gauteng North team for putting on a great and entertaining event. Muscle Evolution will no doubt be back to cover this great event once again in 2011.
