| Date: 2 April 2011 Venue: Cape Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town The 2011 WFF-WBBF Shameen Classic proved, once again, that bodybuilding's following in Cape Town is on the rise. Hosted by local bodybuilding legend Shameen Adams, the Cape Peninsula Technikon was once again packed by local bodybuilding enthusiasts, who had come to witness Cape Town's finest in action. Emcees for the evening were well-known radio personality JP Naude and the gorgeous Tasmin Tobitt, who herself is no stranger to the fitness stage. They both did a great job of keeping the audience entertained and glued to the evening's proceedings. The juniors division got the show off to an impressive start with some great talent, which I look forward to seeing progress in the near future. Kyle Viljoen, Franske Neiteler and Wanda Khuzwayo showed great promise, with Wanda Khuzwayo definitely the man to beat in this particular line-up. Always a highlight to any bodybuilding and fitness show, the ladies bikini division got off to a great start with a massive line-up of some of Cape Town's hottest female physiques, each carrying their own unique qualities. Nastassia Jaffa dominated the line-up with an awesome yet soft bikini look that was clearly what the judges were looking for. Jade Watkin-Jones, the reigning title holder, secured second place with an absolutely stunning display of both physique and stage presence, and was definitely a crowd favourite. Third place went to Christy King, also showing off a very nice, yet soft bikini look that stood out as one of the top physiques in this division. Fourth, fifth and sixth places were followed up by Sonja van Rooyen, Luzanne Kruger and Melissa Strydom. It's worth mentioning that the federation needs to keep stressing the importance of the criteria for this division. Some great physiques on stage didn't make the top six as clearly they were either too lean or carried too much muscle, and possibly should have been placed in other categories. Athletes also need to make sure that they're fully aware of all the criteria for this popular division. In the novice under 75kg division, Sandile Mpanza brought a very promising and impressive physique to the stage, with Siyamazi Kuzana settling for second place and Fabian Campher in third. Ladies Body Fitness saw the incredibly lean and impressive physique of Sharon Stanley-Nel take first place, completely dominating this round with great muscularity and proportions. Bea De Klerk managed to secure second place with an incredibly impressive display of well toned muscle. Bea is still very new to the stage and I have no doubt that she will impress even more in the near future. Monique Hopley rounded up the top three and, as per my comments on Bea, Monique has improved dramatically and will be a serious contender for this division in the near future. Monique's stage presence was awesome and it was refreshing to see such a young athlete with so much confidence on stage. During the event, the “Mean-Machine” himself, Shameen Adams took the stage, displaying some of his signature conditioning. He did a guest posing routine that just seemed to get better with each minute that passed. Worth the entry fee alone, Shameen's posing routine was incredibly well choreographed with music to suit, and at the end he had everyone up from their chairs showing their appreciation for the effort and entertainment that he brought to the show. The novice over 75kg division belonged to Jaco Crouse, who showed off a fine display of muscle, proportion and hardness for a novice athlete. The disabled division was won by Cape Town resident Mdlalana Ntsikelelo, who is rapidly rising in the popularity stakes. While he didn't have any competition in this division, he still displayed great muscle with a well toned physique. The master division was completely dominated by the always impressive physique of Johannes Hendriks. Johannes' talent is simply remarkable, and although I have seen him a bit crisper with respect to his conditioning, he was still way ahead of the pack to take the first place trophy in this division. KZN's Naiem Ally managed to secure a well deserved second place, with Aubrey Preston securing third. The classic bodybuilding under 65kg division was dominated by Oscar Ratya. Easily one of the most shredded physiques on stage, Oscar was the only guy displaying rock hard glutes throughout the competition. Oscar has come a long way with his bodybuilding and he was, without a doubt, one of the most impressive physiques on stage that night. His proportions are great and his conditioning was phenomenal. I'm excited to see what he brings to the stage later this year. The next division, performance bodybuilding under 75kg, saw one of the most competitive battles of the evening take place between the eventual overall winner – Phillip Venter and well-known Cape Town bodybuilder and SA champion, Sydney Booysen. When they stood next to each other, Sydney was proportionately dominant and he knew exactly how to pose each independent muscle group. Phillip, on the other hand, is slightly bigger in the legs, but his conditioning was phenomenal and completely dominated Sydney. So both athletes have their strengths. If Sydney was as hard as Phillip then I think the result would have been a different story, but I have yet to see that type of conditioning out of him. Phillip's physique and presentation was massively impressive. He popped out in every aspect and he has improved massively over the past few years. He still struggles to hold his legs from the front on stage, and although they are still his most impressive body parts, his upper body is now more balanced than ever. Both these athletes are truly awesome to watch, but Phillip was just that bit better on the day. The athletic bodybuilding under 85kg division saw posing superstar and crowd favourite, Joey Koffman take top honours, in what can only be described as a brilliant performance. To be in such great shape so early in the season excites me, as I can't wait to see what Joey brings to the stage later on this year. Joey is a great man, a true ambassador and, in this case, a very deserving winner of this division. He also won the best poser award for the evening and had the audience applauding massively at the end of his mind blowing routine. The athletic bodybuilding under 95kg division belonged to Azar Debbo, who displayed a very muscular physique with the best conditioning in his lineup, which made him the clear winner from the start. In second place was Mario Aisley and Jules Vinon Tcheuffa was in third. Shortly after this division and before the overall lineup was brought on stage, it was time to bring out the main guest of the event – Lee Priest. Lee had the crowd in stitches of laughter from the moment he walked onto stage. Along with his no-holds barred approach to bodybuilding, Shameen and Lee commenced on a small Q&A session, to which Lee had some really great and really specific answers. Once the Q&A was over, and Lee had taken his shirt off to give the fans a taste of his immense size, fans flocked to his stand alongside the stage, where they could be found taking photos and getting autographs with “The Blond Myth” himself. The overall division was soon brought on stage and it quickly became an all out battle for the only place that meant anything in that lineup – first. Without too many comparisons, and to the agreement of the audience, Phillip Venter was announced as the winner. It was a great evening all round, filled with entertainment and great bodybuilding. I'm looking forward to seeing how this show can continue to grow in 2011. Thanks and appreciation must go to all the sponsors who made the show possible, and a big thank you must go out to all the organisers and the Cape Town fans for coming together and making the event as big as it was. A very special thanks to Shameen Adams and Tracey Pike for all their efforts in creating such a great show. Well done to all the athletes that took home the trophies and we hope to see you on stage again soon! |
